Adult Orthodontics in Jersey City
Your goals. A carefully considered plan.
Perhaps you have always wanted to change your smile. Perhaps your teeth have shifted since earlier treatment, or your dentist has recommended an orthodontic evaluation. At Miso Orthodontic Studio, we begin by understanding what brought you here and what you hope to achieve.
We provide individualized orthodontic planning for adults, with attention to tooth alignment, bite relationships, facial balance, and the health of the tissues supporting your teeth.

Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?
Age alone does not determine whether you can have orthodontic treatment. The condition of your teeth, gums, and supporting bone is an important part of the assessment.6
Adults can benefit from orthodontic care, but treatment planning must account for factors such as gum disease, missing teeth, previous dental work, and jaw relationships. We will explain what is possible in your situation and whether any dental care should come first.
What would you like to address?
Patients come to Miso with different priorities, including:
- Crowded, rotated, or overlapping teeth.
- Spaces between teeth.
- A narrow smile or concerns about the width of the upper jaw.
- Teeth that have shifted after previous treatment.
- A bite that does not fit together comfortably.
- Questions about how tooth position relates to their smile and profile.
- A need to coordinate orthodontic care with other planned dental treatment.
- Poor sleep quality, excessive snoring, or other breathing concerns you would like assessed.
Your consultation connects those goals with a clinical assessment. Frequent loud snoring or disrupted sleep may also warrant evaluation by a sleep specialist. We can assess relevant dental and jaw findings and help identify when medical evaluation is needed.8
Clear aligners and braces for adults
We offer braces and clear aligners, with recommendations based on the details of your case. In some cases, braces or clear aligners may be the better choice for the particular tooth movements and bite issues that need to be addressed. We consider those clinical needs alongside your preferences and daily routine.5
We will discuss the advantages and limitations of the suitable options, including whether your goals call for limited treatment or a more comprehensive approach.
Limited treatment focuses on a defined concern. It is not appropriate for every bite or a substitute for comprehensive care when broader correction is needed.
MARPE: an option for adult palatal expansion
A narrow upper jaw can affect the width of the smile and how the upper and lower teeth fit together. For selected adults, miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) offers an option to widen the upper jaw, rather than relying on tooth movement alone. The appliance uses small temporary anchoring screws in the palate to help direct expansion forces to the underlying bone.7
MARPE can make expansion possible without surgically assisted expansion in some adults. Suitability and results vary, so we assess your anatomy, supporting bone, and treatment goals before recommending it. A narrow-looking smile alone does not establish a need for MARPE.7
If you also have snoring or sleep concerns, we assess those separately and coordinate medical evaluation when needed. Expansion is not a guaranteed treatment for sleep apnea.
A detailed assessment before a recommendation
Your evaluation includes a discussion of your medical and dental history, previous orthodontic care, and any breathing or sleep concerns you wish to raise. We review the findings and records to develop a plan around your specific needs.
Because adult jaws have completed most growth, some skeletal concerns require a different approach from treatment in children. If additional specialist input is appropriate, we will explain why and how it fits into your care.
Treatment with room for your questions
You should understand what a plan is intended to change, what its limitations are, and what it will require from you. We will discuss the expected timeline, estimated fees, payment options, and the role of retainers in maintaining the result.
